Piracy & Porn – My 2 Favorite Things!

There’s a lot to be said about piracy. There’s a lot of really awesome theories about how it’s changing media and democratizing entertainment industries and expanding our cultural purview. There’s also a lot of messages from studios and large companies about how not paying for your entertainment is stealing money from the artists, whether it’s in the form of Napster (shut up, I’m old!) or torrents or porn tube sites. I think it’s more complicated than that.

I’m a media producer and performer. I’m also a goddamn pirate. It’s true. I steal a lot of media. I torrent tv shows, or did before I got satellite 2 days ago. I download music illegally. I download books. I have even watched bootleg movies. And I don’t feel guilty about it. Because I make up for it by supporting my favorite artists or shows or performers however I can in other ways. I buy concert tickets and t-shirts. I promote to my friends. I have gone out and bought cds and dvds after I’ve already seen them (especially true of tv). I buy affiliated merchandise. I make sure to but an author’s next release. I don’t have a lot of money to spend on entertainment, but I do what I can to make up for my less than ethical activities.

Now here comes another important point – I NEVER steal from small or independent producers of ANY of that media. The media I steal is the kind where the artists have already been paid. It’s not a perfect justification, but it’s better than straight up ripping people off. I want to be realistic. The culture of piracy is deeply embedded in our consumer culture at this point. I can’t win that fight. But I can show you what the stakes are when you steal from independent productions.

If you steal my porn, or pretty much any of the porn I ever link to, you’re not stealing from Clips4Sale the company. If you illegally record my cam shows, you’re not taking that income from Streamate. You’re taking it from ME and from other independent producers and performers who count on this money to pay our rent, buy the lights that make that video look better, and gas to go shoot with the other models you’re looking at. And that’s just wrong. It’s morally repugnant.

Be selfish. If we can’t afford to live off this job, we’re going to stop. Make it worth our while to be naked on the internet for you.

If you find me through a pirate site, please tell me. Then do the right thing and make up for it. I KNOW most of you don’t pay for all the smut you watch. Even I’ve been guilty of silently perving in free cam rooms from time to time. But if I can’t tip I do my best to drive traffic in that direction. Now it’s your turn to turn it around. Support your local smut-makers! If you see a girl you like on a tube site – go find her website and buy something directly from her. If there’s a dude you were particularly impressed with – go buy one of his clips. Drop a tip in a cam room just because. And that doesn’t just go for independent models and performers – it goes for independent studio producers as well. They do a LOT of work and treat their models well. I personally would like them to be able to continue to hire me. Stealing from a multi-million dollar company? Frankly, I don’t care. Stealing from someone personally? Fuck you, asshole.

Here, I’ll make it really easy for you to start alleviating the guilt you should be feeling right about now.

  1. Well said! It’s a tricky issue… Hopefully conditions will change to make piracy less of an issue, but right now it obviously sucks. 🙁

Thanks for tackling this! You rock! 🙂
